Prostate cancer is the third most common cancer in men (after colon and lung cancer) and is generally one of the major medical problems present within the male population. According to available information, the incidence of this disease and the mortality rate have been on an upward trend since the 1970s. Prostate cancer is a serious disease that affects a large number of men from the active age of forty, to the elderly, significantly affecting their quality and length of life.
The incidence of prostate cancer in the Czech Republic has almost tripled in the last twenty years. Approximately 8,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. However, deaths from prostate cancer are roughly three times lower than in previous years. This significant decrease is due to the availability of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, as part of preventive check-ups by GPs, urologists and other specialists, and also because of modern treatment.
